Stray Dog Rescued After Days with Cheeseball Bucket on Head – Blocklines

Stray Dog Rescued After Days with Cheeseball Bucket on Head

A stray dog wandering the streets of East St. Louis recently captured hearts and headlines after being spotted with an unlikely — and dangerous — accessory: a large, empty cheeseball bucket stuck on his head. The story, reported by The Dodo, follows the dramatic rescue of the pup, later nicknamed Buckethead, by the determined team at Gateway Pet Guardians (GPG). The tale of his survival and transformation is both heartwarming and a powerful reminder of the importance of community-led animal rescue efforts.

A friendly looking golden retriever.

The incident began around Valentine’s Day, when GPG began receiving multiple calls about a brown dog seen roaming with a purple plastic container over his head. The bucket, once filled with cheeseballs, had become a trap. Drawn by hunger, the dog had likely tried to lick out the last crumbs, only to find himself unable to remove the container. With his face completely enclosed, he was at immediate risk of dehydration, starvation, and even suffocation.

GPG had been aware of the stray for some time, but he had always managed to avoid capture. The added danger of the bucket made the situation far more urgent. According to a press release from the organization, responders made several attempts to locate and rescue him, even joining forces with Stray Rescue of St. Louis. Despite their best efforts, the frightened dog continued to evade them. It wasn’t until a concerned citizen provided a photo and precise location that the rescue team was finally able to act decisively.

On February 13, GPG responders found the dog again, but he bolted before they could intervene. The following morning, the team returned with reinforcements and a new strategy. Realizing that direct capture was unlikely, they used a light sedative delivered via dart to slow the dog just enough for a safe approach. The plan worked. Once leashed, the rescuers removed the bucket — and revealed a face that was as sweet as it was relieved.

Alisha Vianello, executive director of GPG, noted that the dog had likely gone without food or water for at least three to four days. “Had it stayed on any longer, the outcome could have been tragic,” she said. Thankfully, the team’s persistence paid off just in time.

Once at the shelter, the dog’s demeanor began to change. While he had been terrified of people during his time on the run, the safety of the shelter and the comfort of food and care quickly began to transform him. He started showing affection, seeking out attention, and bonding with staff and other dogs. “He loves people and loves to give kisses and loves to get treats and snuggle,” Vianello told The Dodo. “He is excellent with other dogs, he’s such a good boy.”

Without a microchip and no clear evidence of a previous home, Buckethead’s origins remain a mystery. But what is certain is that he is now safe, loved, and ready for a second chance. GPG hopes to find him a forever home where he can continue to thrive. “He was so scared when he was on the run, but now he has realized that people are his friends,” Vianello said. “I think he will make an excellent family pet. He has a great temperament and personality, I just adore him.”

I found this detail striking: despite the ordeal he endured, Buckethead’s capacity for trust and affection returned so quickly once he was safe. It’s a testament to both the resilience of animals and the impact of compassionate care. His story also highlights the importance of community involvement in animal welfare. The photo and tip from a concerned citizen were pivotal in his rescue — a reminder that even small actions can make a life-saving difference.

For those interested in adopting Buckethead or supporting similar rescue efforts, Gateway Pet Guardians provides resources and opportunities to get involved. Whether through adoption, donation, or simply spreading awareness, there are many ways to help ensure that dogs like Buckethead receive the help they need when they need it most.

Stories like this one resonate not only because of the drama and relief but also because they reflect the best of what people can do when they come together for a cause. A stray dog with a cheeseball bucket on his head may sound like an unusual headline, but behind it is a narrative of perseverance, teamwork, and hope. And for one very good boy, it’s the beginning of a much brighter chapter.
