Some creep dumped him in the desert near our home. 11 years ago we noticed a bedraggled and dreadlocked young cat, more than half grown, hanging around for a couple of months. He insisted he wanted to move in.

My husband said 2 cats were enough, to feed him outside. I was doing that. Whenever someone visited there he was, walking them from their car to our door and yelling to let him in.

He ran in the garage whenever it was opened, and didn’t want to leave. He kept yowling about the kitty-eaters outside. His vocalizations sounded just like “let me in”.

Finally CJ relented. I took Drifter to the vet, got him neutered and health checked, cut off his numerous dreadlocks, and let him inside.

I never knew a cat to learn house manners so quickly, and our kitties are indoor-only. I think he was afraid we’d throw him out if he messed up. No! He quickly took over as alpha cat, but still cringed when the coyotes howled.

I think he had close calls in the past, as dogs barking never fazed him. He talks so much he sounds like a politician, and now is finally confident enough to growl at those predators outside our windows.

Now our gorgeous long haired guy with personality-plus makes us thankful every day that he drifted into our lives.
