Six months after the death of my beloved dog, I was still deeply depressed. My psychiatrist suggested that I get a new dog. That advice convinced me. Although it was a difficult decision, I began looking for a dog similar to the one I had lost.

I went to the shelter with a friend, hoping to adopt a puppy, but there were already people interested. Instead, the veterinarian showed me a one-year-old dog who had been examined and spayed. She had been abandoned on the street during winter—hungry and dirty. The vet suggested I at least take her for a walk.
I did, and she was incredibly well-behaved. Still, I said I needed time to think. The next morning, my friend called and asked if we were going to pick up Lasti. I said yes. We went on a frosty winter morning.

The beginning wasn’t easy. I was still sad, though less than before. Lasti had separation anxiety and cried when I left for work or even the store. But we managed. Today, we live in Scotland. I’ve gained a husband—and Lasti has a new human dad too.
