Bella is not a rescue in the usual sense, but I do believe that if we hadn’t adopted her in 2007 she may not be here today. Bella is a combination of a Cavalier King Charles and a Shih-Tzu. A wonderful mix, but unfortunately she grew longer than her frame could handle.

One morning in 2010 things took a terrible turn when she wasn’t able to make it back into the house after being outside. She screamed when I picked her up and was shaking violently. Knowing shaking is a sign of immense pain, I yelled to my husband that we needed to go to the vet, and we needed to go now!

By the time she was admitted, Bella could no longer move her back end or walk. Emergency surgery confirmed a herniated disc, and revealed a blood clot had been putting pressure on her nerves causing her hind end paralyses. Since the clot had formed slowly, it was unlikely her paralyses would be permanent, but time would tell.

Every day she was at the hospital I spent 2-3 hours just sitting with her. I wanted her to know that she was coming home, that she hadn’t been abandoned.

Fast forward almost four years later and she is doing extremely well. She walks like a drunken sailor sometimes when she is sniffing the grass, but other than that, she is perfect!

Although this may not be a typical rescue story, I feel we were able to recuse her from an uncertain fate. I am ever so grateful to have her in my life, and I just don’t think it’s a coincidence that dog is God spelled back words. I don’t think the universe is that careless.
