Despite his gentle nature and bright spirit, Beaux’s early life was marked by neglect and misunderstanding. Because breeders couldn’t sell him due to his facial structure, he was given away for free. The man who took him in soon relegated Beaux to the backyard after the puppy didn’t get along with his cats. There, Beaux spent five years alone, exposed to the elements, without proper care or companionship.
Local rescue groups tried to help, but Beaux was repeatedly returned to the same backyard, unable to adjust to new environments due to his lack of training and socialization. When Jamie Hulit learned about his situation, she felt compelled to act. She reached out immediately, offering to adopt him outright and give him the stable home he had never known.
Hulit, who had experienced the foster system herself before being adopted at age nine, understood the toll that instability can take. Her determination to provide Beaux with a permanent, loving home was rooted in deep empathy. “I wanted him to have stability and a place he knew was his home,” she explained. “That is why I adopted him outright from the owner.”
When she first met Beaux, the extent of his neglect was shocking. He was severely underweight, his ribs visible beneath his fur. Fleas and ear mites covered his body, and his overall condition was dire. Hulit brought him to the Hoegemeyer Animal Clinic in Kerrville, Texas, where Dr. Jay Rydberg diagnosed him with heartworms. At that point, Beaux was too weak to begin treatment, and his chances of survival were estimated at just 50 percent.
Despite the grim prognosis, Hulit remained steadfast. “I told the vet I didn’t care,” she said, committed to doing whatever it took to save him. Beaux spent his first month in and out of an oxygen tank, with Dr. Rydberg monitoring him around the clock. There were moments when it seemed he wouldn’t make it, and Hulit was even called in during the night to say goodbye. But Beaux, like his new mom, refused to give up.
Over the following months, Beaux gradually gained weight and strength. Once he was healthy enough, he underwent heartworm treatment. Though he lost hearing in one ear and had limited vision in one eye, he ultimately received a clean bill of health. For Hulit, the emotional and financial investment was worth it. “There are people who will pay high dollar for a dog’s papers,” she said. “I feel like I paid for his health certificate.”
Since his adoption, Beaux has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once an outdoor dog who had never known comfort, he now prefers to stay indoors, only venturing outside if Hulit accompanies him. He has also formed a close bond with Riley, a 13-year-old golden retriever mix who became his older brother. The two dogs are inseparable, playing and sleeping side by side. Riley’s calm demeanor has helped Beaux adjust to life as a cherished house pet, while Beaux’s puppy-like energy has brought new vitality to Riley’s golden years.
Beaux’s new life includes more than just a loving home. He has become a foster brother to numerous dogs and kittens through the rescue organizations Hulit supports.
