The little Siamese was alone and scared. She had a home once, but the big storm came, and then the water, and she had to leave. The humans called it Katrina.

After the water went away, she couldn’t find her home or her humans, so she wandered the streets alone. After a few months of finding what she could to eat and fighting off other cats, the little Siamese found herself carrying babies.
One day, the humans came. They left a box with food in it. She was hungry, so she went in and it snapped shut. She was trapped. The humans took her to someplace called a shelter, and they called her Snowflake. It wasn’t her name, but it was nice to have food and a warm place to sleep, and it was just in time for her six kittens to be born.

After a few weeks, some humans came with a big white van. They put Snowflake and her kittens in a cage in the van with other cats from the shelter. And then they drove and drove for a long time. The ladies talked to the kitties in the van, telling them they were taking them to new homes in a place called Massachusetts.
Finally they arrived. Because Snowflake was still taking care of her babies, they kept her in a special place away from other cats. Eventually, the babies were weaned and moved away from Snowflake, and Snowflake joined the rest of the cats. They named the babies after their momma and called them Snowflake #1, #2, #3, #4, #5 and #6. All but one of Snowflake’s kittens were adopted quickly. One day, a nice family came and decided that Snowflake would be happy with them, and she was adopted, as well.

Snowflake #6 was still at the shelter the day I visited. Her pale blue eyes grabbed me immediately, and I brought her home that day. We called her Snowy or Snowbear, for her mother. She was born in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina and moved to Massachusetts when she was 4 weeks old.
