Scaredy Cat Learns to Be Brave When She Makes New Kitten Friend

My boyfriend and I already had a cat and we weren’t looking to add to the family. Cherry is a very picky eater, and she believes she is a princess and should be treated like one. One day, though, we went to a pet store to buy food for her, and they had cats from a shelter there so we went to look at them. We immediately fell in love with a black kitty.

We filled out all the forms, and a few days later, we went to pick her up. She was 7 months old, and the lady told us her time was almost up; she had lived there most of her life and no one wanted to adopt her because black cats are “bad luck.”

We took her home, where we noticed she was scared of everything. Cherry didn’t really like her, so they never got close. We tried very hard to make her feel safe and happy, but no matter what we did, she was always scared. She eventually learned that we weren’t going to hurt her, so she would come near for us to pet her, but we couldn’t pick her up. Any loud noise would send her running and screaming. Yes, screaming.

A year and a half later, we rescued Honey from a shelter. She was tiny, unafraid, and full of life. To our amazement, Chocolate became like a mother to the tiny kitten. They did everything together.

Now, a year later, we can see how amazing Honey has been for her. For the first time, Chocolate went up to a window. She had been scared of heights. For the first time, she is also jumping up on our laps. Before, she had been scared of being held. Now she plays when the other cats are playing. Before, she would only watch from a distance.

We rescued Chocolate and Honey from shelters, but in the end, Honey rescued Chocolate.
