Meet Hazel.
The sweet senior (estimated to be in her 20’s) and blind in one eye was rescued from a kill pen. Sadly, there are many older horses who are discarded at auctions, and not all are rescued in time.
Hazel’s luck changed when she was rescued by Mid-Atlantic Horse Rescue to be a companion for a blind off-track Thoroughbred (OTTB) named Stevie.

Stevie was rescued from a neglect situation and needed a new friend after his last mare companion passed away.
Hazel and Stevie instantly bonded and soon she was referred to as Stevie’s “girlfriend”. Their caretakers shared that they, “totally rely on each other.”

Thanks to your donations, Hazel was given medicine to treat and prevent painful stomach ulcers that are brought on by stress.
The rescue said, “Hazel has always suffered from bouts of diarrhea and gastric upset. Since we started her on a maintenance dose of Ulcergard, her condition had stabilized.”
She went through a lot before finding a forever home at the rescue, and your support helped her feel her best.

Hazel remained Stevie’s best friend who helped him navigate the pasture and provided emotional support when needed until her last day.
The rescue recently shared that sweet Hazel has crossed the Rainbow Bridge surrounded by those who loved her, including Stevie.
