Sprinting Cat Startles Early Morning Walker, But Turns on the Charm

I went out early to work one day so I could get a walk in while it was still cool. It was still dark as I got out of my car, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw something running toward me.

It scared me to death at first, but it turned out to be this little cat that was nothing but skin and bones. We got a lot of dumped cats out where I used to work before getting laid off, but most of them we could never catch. She walked right up to me, meowing loudly and rubbing against my legs. She was pathetically skinny, and all I had to feed her was part of a hamburger bun I found in the break room.

When my boss went out for lunch, he asked if I wanted anything, and I said, “Yeah, a couple of cans of cat food.” It was so obvious she hadn’t eaten in a long while. I’ve always been a dog person, but I wound up taking her home with me. I named her Jypsy, and she’s so smart it amazes me.

She gained weight, got a little bigger, and became very comfortable in her new house (see photo below). I jokingly call her a “diva” because she basically runs the house. She comes running when she hears anyone dig into the ice bin. You must take a cube of ice and hold it so she can rub her face all over it before you put it in her water dish to cool the water down a bit.

When I was laid off and couldn’t find a job for five years, she kept me focused and made me laugh every single day with her antics. My roommate says she’s funnier than anything on television. She very well might be said to have saved me, and not the other way around.

By the way, have I mentioned that I’m highly allergic to cats? I’ve become acclimated to her, however… and we get along just fine. I can’t imagine my life without her.
