One of the guys came into the office area with a tiny kitten curled up in his hand, saying it was nearly run over and who would take it. There was a lot of hemming and hawing and someone suggested that they make it a “shop kitty.” I decided that meant it was on its own and I volunteered.

I named him Sky because as a lynx point Siamese it was the color of his eyes. I already had two cats, both female, but they were sisters and had never been around any other cats since I got them.

Two sleeping kittens curled against each other, one calico and one cream-colored with darker ears.

That evening as he curled up next to me in my recliner Misty jumped up on the footrest and began meowing loudly. Sky came scrambling up from his hidey hole and it was instant bonding.

Misty acted as a mother to Sky despite never having been one. She groomed him, and cuddled him, and even let him try to nurse.

My other cat Shimmer, merely wrinkled her nose and kept her distance. About two weeks later, my son’s friend was moving out of state and couldn’t take her kitten. Cali, as we so cleverly named her, had been found very tiny and very hungry. The vet said she had been eating garbage and it made her sick. Fortunately, she would be fine, just a little smaller than normal.

Sky and Cali became instant friends and wrestling buddies. They are both two years old now and they keep the house lively. They both love to share the recliner and Cali gets attention by walking the top of the curtain rod like a balance beam, or getting on top the display cabinet.

If you ignore her long enough, she gets down and pouts. For a while anyway. Love ’em to the moon and back, and neither is on their own or hungry.
