Over the course of three weeks, I had lost two of my cats, Neko and Travis, to unrelated illnesses. Even my husband noticed how depressed I was for weeks afterwards. I did still have my other two babies, Simon and Phoebe (Travis’ sister).

One spring day, I went with my friend to a metro park I had never been to before for a walk. While there, I heard a strange noise, kind of bird-like. I went to investigate, and there he was in the middle of a clearing meowing his head off: An orange and white kitten.

I yelled to my friend, “It’s a baby kitty!” and started running toward him. He began running toward me. My friend later said it looked like something out of a love story, both of us running to each other.

There were no homes in the area and no other kittens or mama cat. I couldn’t leave him there, so I wrapped him up in my coat and took him home. I put him in a spare bedroom and waited for my husband to come home, certain that he would say we couldn’t keep him. I was wrong…

In fact, the first night, my husband slept on the floor with him to keep him company. He was about 8 weeks old when we found him on May 8, which was two months to the day after Travis had passed away. That means Liam could have been born on the same day that Travis died. I feel this was not a coincidence but rather a gift from God to ease my broken heart.

Less than a month after we found Liam, we adopted another cat, Kumori, because four cats are better than three!
