On a quiet evening not long ago, Carla Stowe noticed something was off. Her dogs were unusually restless, pacing and barking as if trying to draw her attention to something outside. Stowe, who serves as president of Baby Gunn’s Animal Rescue, trusted their instincts. Grabbing a flashlight, she stepped into the yard to investigate. What she discovered would soon become a sobering reminder of the cruelty some animals face—and the compassion that can change everything.

As she scanned the yard, her flashlight beam landed on a yellow crate lying in the grass. It was crudely sealed with duct tape and zip ties. At first glance, it looked like discarded debris. But as she moved closer, she realized someone—or something—was inside. Peering through the slats, she saw a pair of eyes silently pleading for help.

Stowe later told The Dodo that she wasn’t immediately sure what kind of animal was inside. “I could see his eyes, but [I was] not really sure what was in the crate,” she said. What she could hear, though, was unmistakable: the steady thumping of a tail against the side of the box. Despite being confined and abandoned, the animal inside was wagging its tail.
She carefully cut through the tape and zip ties, opening the crate to reveal a pit bull. The sight caused her heart to sink. Pit bulls, often misunderstood and stigmatized, are among the most frequently abandoned breeds. This one, later named RD, had been left alone in a sealed crate, yet still greeted his rescuer with hope and affection.
Stowe was understandably furious at the cruelty RD had endured. But her focus quickly shifted to the future—specifically, RD’s new beginning. He was brought into the care of Baby Gunn’s Animal Rescue, where he began the slow process of healing and adjusting to his new environment. According to Stowe, “He is slowly adjusting. We have introduced him to a few of the others that reside here.”
Stories of abandoned dogs, especially those involving pit bulls, are unfortunately not rare. However, each one is a powerful reminder of the importance of animal rescue and advocacy. RD’s story is particularly compelling because it highlights not only the neglect he suffered but also the resilience he displayed. Even after being left in a duct-taped crate, he responded to human contact with trust and affection.
At Baby Gunn’s, RD is now surrounded by people and animals who care for him. He is learning to interact with other dogs and to accept the kindness he deserves. When he’s ready, he will be placed for adoption. For RD, the future looks far brighter than the night he was found.
Animal abandonment is a serious issue, and stories like RD’s shed light on the emotional and physical toll it takes on pets. But they also underscore the incredible work done by rescue organizations and individuals like Carla Stowe, who respond with compassion and commitment. RD’s journey from a sealed crate to a loving environment is a testament to what’s possible when people choose to help rather than turn away.
For those considering pet adoption, RD’s experience serves as a poignant reminder of the second chances we can offer. Every rescue dog has a story, and for many, the next chapter can be one of healing and happiness. As Stowe put it, “His future will be a bright one.”
