You Helped Provide Fun and Games to Shelter Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are gentle, social animals that can even form attachments to their humans, so ending up in a shelter can be stressful for them. Thanks to you, though, three pairs of guinea pigs had a comfortable – and even fun – time waiting for forever homes!

With help from your clicks, trivia participation, shopping for a cause, and direct donations, the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) in Colorado recently received treats and toys through our partner Greater Good Charites’ GOODS program. These fun supplies immediately got to work benefitting some new temporary residents.

Candy and Kit Kat came to HSPPR together when their owner could no longer care for them. They’ve since been adopted out as a pair, but it was a scary time for them when they first left their home. The shelter says a treat helped lure them out, though.

They told us, “They spent a lot of time hiding amongst their bedding but came out to explore their new veggie burger and side salad.”

Smores and Cookie were among 24 guinea pigs that had been packed into one carrier together until they got a second chance at a better life through HSPPR. With such tight – and neglected – quarters, staff put the females in foster care initially to make sure there weren’t any pups on the way. Once the all-clear came, they were ready to head to the shelter to wait for a forever home.

Smores and Cookie were adopted together, too, but before then, HSPPR said, “Smores and her friend Cookie (not pictured) both enjoyed running through and hiding in their new tunnel!”

Fergus and Wilbur were surprise babies that their owners couldn’t care for. At only 4 weeks old, they were very young shelter residents!  They had plenty of fun to distract them before being adopted together, though, with HSPPR saying they “enjoyed exploring and nibbling on their new wave hideout and chews.”

You provided for these sweet guinea pigs in their time of need, but they were just a few of the beneficiaries. With shelters having to spend so much on food and medical care, the budget doesn’t always allow for treats, toys, and other comfort items, so these donations are appreciated.

HSPPR says, “Staff and animals were so excited to receive all of the items donated and put them into action around the shelters in Colorado Springs and Pueblo. It was like Christmas in April! We are tremendously thankful and grateful for this incredible donation from our friends at TheAnimalRescueSite.com and to Greater Good Charities for coordinating it all!”
